The Chicago Athenaeum “Green Good Design Award” 2012

The new Campus Project of the Istanbul Technical University is designed to create a comfortable living environment with a contemporary aesthetic, while keeping in mind the local climatic conditions, surrounding urban fabric, program requirements, available construction methods, appropriate material choices and budget limits given by the client. The project received the Green Good Design Award 2012.

Main Design Principles:

• Respecting the surrounding environment and urban fabric 
• Visually connecting to the Harbor Area and the Sea
• Tapping into the green belt around the Old City Walls and continuing this Green Connection through the campus 
• Creating a local Micro-Climate within the campus by designing naturally shaded spaces, introducing inner courtyards and streets within, allowing for a two-way air circulation and wind corridors to form, in answer to the overwhelmingly hot and dry local climate conditions.

An ecologically sound and sustainable architectural and urban design was sought within the above approaches. With a technological and contemporary approach, the existing and new architecture has been merged into a congruous whole with fluid spatial and programmatic transitions to generate inviting and lively learning environments.

The historical buildings that were decided to be preserved by the Historical Heritage Committee are integrated new Campus design to form organic continuity of use and space.

The interconnected nature of the architectural elements with their extended overhangs, upper-storey connections and bridges, are designed to allow for multi-layered pedestrian axes and promenades that create a continuous spatial narrative.
