This Concert Hall project was designed as a competition entry for the new cultural center in Warsaw, Poland. It is a multifunctional musical complex that will become the center of a new cultural area on the right bank of the city on the land of a late 19th century Veterinary Institute. The complex will house not only the new Sinfonia Varsovia Concert Hall, but also become the future seat of the Orkiestra Sinfonia Varsovia.
An important part of the project is restoring the fi ve worthy buildings of the existing Veterinary Institute that is classical in style and axial in layout. Integrating the design of the new building and landscape with these buildings and incorporating them into the functions of the complex was an important consideration. In our project, two of these buildings were used as rehearsal and administration spaces that completed the concert hall functions of the
new proposal building located in between.
The physical openness of the estate, the mostly public character of the functions inside and easy accessibility of the area by public transportation help to create a welcoming and fl exible complex. Ample green space on the site, along with its location next to a public park, provides a relaxing and beautiful environment for the production, performance and study of music. Features such as the outdoor performance space at the heart of the project in front of the Concert Hall Entrance Plaza with a view towards the park, as well as the terraces in front of Buildings D and E, are designed to enliven the local musical experience and to provide space for new possibilities for classical music to reach audiences both formally and informally.
